Stora Enso North America in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., could receive up to $30 million for a proposed plant that will convert wood waste to renewable diesel using the Fischer-Tropsch process. NewPage Corp. in Miamisburg, Ohio, recently acquired Stora Enso, the original funding applicant.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- (From Wausau Daily News)
The federal government is offering NewPage millions of dollars to build a cellulosic ethanol plant here, but the company doesn't know if the project is feasible.

Department of Energy officials announced Tuesday that the company would get $30 million, part of $114 million that will be made available to build small-scale biorefineries at four locations throughout the country. The funds are part of an initiative to reduce U.S. oil consumption.

However, there's no guarantee the project will reach a groundbreaking, said Amber Garwood, vice president of communications for NewPage.

"There is a feasibility process that needs to take place to see if the project is even viable," she said.

Garwood offered no timeline for a decision, but a similar project for a NewPage refinery in Escanaba, Mich., which was announced in August, is still in the feasibility determination process.

The request for federal funds was initially submitted by Stora Enso North America before it was purchased by NewPage of Miamisburg, Ohio. According to the Energy Department, the proposed refinery would be completed by 2012 and produce 370 barrels of biofuel per day from mill residues and wood chips.
